Natural Remedies for Flea Control

There are many natural ways to combat fleas, that are safe for pets and people. Common household items that many of us have on hand already. White vinegar mixed with an equal amount of water in a spray bottle. Cats may need to get used to it though! You can also spray this on carpeting and bedding. Hydrogen peroxide can be used , pouring it on will make the fleas jump off. Rinse thoroughly and keep it away from their face. Lemon juice is recognized as one of the best home remedies for fleas. Cats do not like citrus smells so they may not take to it at first.Cut up 2 lemons and steep in a pan of boiling water for 2-4 hours. let cool and drain off any particles before pouring into a spray bottle. Cats skin can become irritated so check for any signs of redness or reaction to it.Some spices work well too! Cumin can be put into their food and only a small amount is needed. How do you control fleas on your pets? Do any of these natural ones work best for you?

State Cat!

The State Cat of Maine!

The Maine Coon was recognized as the official state cat of Maine in 1985. Although their breed has been around since before the turn of the century. The name Maine is most likely a nautical term that refers to the area being a mainland. This reference was first used in 1622. The states nickname is the pine tree state, and the white pine is the state tree. If you would like to know more please go to the link. There you will find other states official cats, dogs, and emblems.

Pregnant cats

Pregnant cats need more nutrition during this time. 25% more calories, protein, and nutrients. Make sure to provide extra food and water but be careful not to overfeed too much. A premium quality food is sufficient and unless directed by your vet supplements are usually not necessary. After the kittens are born she will continue to need extra nutrition and plenty of water. As the kittens grow and are slowly weened her diet can return to her normal intake. Giving your pregnant cat plenty of love and affection and a quiet place to birth will make it less stressful for her. Training your cat

When you bring home your newest member of the family it is always best to help your kitty to adjust to their new surroundings. Keep them safe by having windows shut or screens secure and doors closed. Frightened cats may look for a way out and you don't want to lose your pet! The first week they will be getting used to the new space and seeking out areas that make them feel comfortable. If you have other pets introduce them gradually so they don't feel threatened. Talk to them in calm reassuring tones and offer plenty of love and affection! Before you know it they will fit in with the rest of the family!  https://www.paws.org/library/cats/home-life/helping-your-cat-adjust/

Vitamins for cats

There is debate as to whether you should give your cats supplements or not. Most vets say that if your cat is eating a healthy diet they do not need them. Many cats have deficiencies caused by a medical condition such as small intestine disease that makes it hard to absorb B Vitimins folate and cobalamine. Oral supplements do not work for this and injections must be given. Pregnant cats need more nutrition as well as sick or older cats. Always check with your vet before giving any supplements because they may not need them. Please go to the link for more information!

How do you feel about supplements for your cat? Do they help or do you feel it isn't necessary.

Types of Cat Supplements

  • General vitamins and minerals: A variety of single or multivitamin products are available for cats. Most cat foods contain all the necessary vitamins and minerals that a cat needs.
  • Essential fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 fatty acids are touted for their ability to keep a cat’s coat shiny and to prevent shedding. They also protect a cat’s immune system, liver, eyes, brain, and joints. And, just like in humans, omega-3 fatty acids boost heart health and fight high cholesterol. Cat foods contain a lot more omega6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, so some think supplementation is needed. But not everyone is sold on the idea.
  • Probiotics: Probiotics are healthy, “good” bacteria that help improve digestive health. They contain microorganisms such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or Lactobacillus casei (also found in some yogurts), which control the overgrowth of "bad" bacteria in the large intestine.

Keep your cat flea free

As the weather gets warm your kitty needs protection when they go outside. There are products available to help prevent unwanted pests that can cause your cat and you discomfort. Spot on treatments are more effective than shampoo or flea powder and can be purchased from your vet or over the counter. Always read the label and make sure it is safe for cats! Safety

Indoor Safety for Cats

There are many hazardous things your cat can get into in your house. Make sure that they don't chew on any wires. Try to keep them out of the way so that your kitty isn't tempted to play with them. Houseplants can be a source for concern as well. Certain ones are poisonous such as English ivy, oleander, philodendron, calla lily, and poinsettia. Cats can also develop allergies just like people do. Safer plants to have are African violets, orchids, zebra plants, and  air plants. Cat grass can be grown and is safe for them to ingest. Ids for all pets is recommended just in case they should get out. Cats are curious and looking outside a window at birds may cause them to want to take a closer look! Make sure open windows are screened in and are sturdy. Especially if you live on upper floors of a house or apartment. With a little prevention your kitty will be safe and happy!

Give your kitty plenty of love, toys, and playtime!

Please try to help them when they need it as most rely on donations from their communities. They do their best to provide comfort, shelter, and healing to these animals in need. Please visit the link below that will give you information on rescue groups in your area. Many are in need of foster homes until they are adopted, if you are interested contact them for more information. Thank you animal lovers!

Max!

Favorite Toys

Max loves to play with all his toys. He gets plenty of playtime and exercise everyday with his Mom and Dad and any guests who come to visit! He is friendly and outgoing and loves attention! When he isn't in the mood to be sociable he will swish his big tail around and walk away! One of his favorite toys is a little stuffed panda bear! He loves to carry it all over the house so its always with him. It's his baby! What kinds of toys are your cats favorite? Do they carry them around the house too?

Here he is with his toys, Ed's socks, and his panda bear!

Max!

Favorite Foods

Max eats a diet that is mainly dry cat food. He can be a bit picky his Mom Sandy told me! Some of his favorite things are treats and tuna! Anytime her or her husband get ice-cream he jumps up in a hurry! Me too he thinks! Well they don't want him to have it so they give him his treats or tuna so he feels like he is having a 'treat' too! What are your cats favorite things to eat? Do you feed them dry, wet, or both? There are so many brands out there and different ingredients in them. Many owners are now making their own by grinding up quality meat themselves just to be sure they know what their pets are eating.

Funny but his Mom has to pick up after him!  What kind of things do your cats like to do? Do they hide stuff or carry things around with them too?

Maine Coon Cats

Origins of Maine Coon Cats

Where do Maine Coon Cats come from? There are some interesting myths and legends about them. One saying goes that they are the result of a domestic cat and raccoon mating! That one is pure myth as they are two different species. Another one is that a captain named Coon from England kept long haired cats on his ship to keep rodents down, as he docked in ports in Maine his feline companions mated with native cats. The offspring were dark brown, large, and had long bushy tails that may have been mistaken for raccoons. Given his name and their appearance Coon cats became a popular name given to them. A most fascinating legend involves Marie Antoinette! In a plot to smuggle the French Queen out of France, a captain Clough was enlisted to gather her belongings and six of her favorite cats. She was seized and beheaded, but the captain sailed to America upon where her cats bred with the native breeds producing Maine Coons. The most logical origin is that settlers coming to America brought their cats with them and they bred with the domestic cats here. Producing the breed that has the stamina and strength to endure harsh cold weather and excellent intelligence and hunting skills.http://cfa.org/Breeds/BreedsKthruR/MaineCoon/MCArticle.aspx

Grooming 101

Tips to keep Kitty looking their best!

Maine Coons have some special grooming needs. Their coats have two layers and they are prone to matting.Weekly brushing should help avoid this and hairballs! Many like water so if you are able to a bath is good for them. With the amount of hair they have make sure to wet it thoroughly and rinse well.Keeping their claws trimmed is also beneficial so as to not snag your furniture or you! Some pet owners brush their teeth and there are products available for this. Starting a grooming schedule when they are young is best so that they become accustomed to it. If you would like to share your grooming tips or helpful ideas please feel free! http://www.maine-coon-cat-nation.com/cat-grooming-tips.html

Maine Coon Attitude!

Behavior

How does your Maine Coon behave? Are they more laid back than other cats? More outgoing?  Most Maine Coons are gentle giants, they love to be around people and other pets. They are very social and like to be around where the family is at. They get along well with children too. They have a natural affinity for water! Most cats don't, and they have a unique way of "meowing" that is more of a "chirping sound". Some have even been taught to play fetch!

Warm Weather Safety!

Keeping Kitty Comfy In Hot Weather

Spring is in the air! Summer not far away! We all know to put on sunscreen and keep ourselves hydrated, but outdoor cats need extra protection in staying safe. Fleas and ticks, insect stings, and extreme heat can be bad for your cat. Always keep fresh water available, check your cats paws for any damage from hot asphalt, and make sure they have access to shade. Now would be a good time to make sure their vaccinations are up to date too! On extremely hot days it's better to keep them inside where they wont get overcome from the heat. Having air conditioning is great, but if not make sure to have some fans blowing to circulate the air.

Dry or wet?

Which one is better for your cat?

There is much debate about the best diet for your cat. They are obligate carnivores  and that means they eat meat. Dry cat food is more convenient because it can be kept longer but may not supply all of the necessary moisture for digestion. Always have fresh water available for your cat. Wet food has more moisture in it and may provide more minerals and vitamins than dry varieties. Meat should be the number one ingredient in their food. Using both can help insure your kitty is getting a healthy diet!http://www.maine-coon-cat-nation.com/best-cat-food.html

Maine Coon Health

Maine Coon Health Concerns

Most Maine Coons are typically healthy, but there are  some health issues that this breed can have.
Hereditary issues they may encounter are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) a common form of heart disease in cats. Hip dysplaysia, a defect of the hip socket, and spinal muscular atrophy which is death of nerves in the spinal column that affect the legs and trunk of the body. Regular vet checkups can help prevent most health issues in them and all cat breeds
