Indoor Safety for Cats

There are many hazardous things your cat can get into in your house. Make sure that they don't chew on any wires. Try to keep them out of the way so that your kitty isn't tempted to play with them. Houseplants can be a source for concern as well. Certain ones are poisonous such as English ivy, oleander, philodendron, calla lily, and poinsettia. Cats can also develop allergies just like people do. Safer plants to have are African violets, orchids, zebra plants, and  air plants. Cat grass can be grown and is safe for them to ingest. Ids for all pets is recommended just in case they should get out. Cats are curious and looking outside a window at birds may cause them to want to take a closer look! Make sure open windows are screened in and are sturdy. Especially if you live on upper floors of a house or apartment. With a little prevention your kitty will be safe and happy!

Rescue Groups and Shelters

There are many Maine Coon cats that are in desperate need of loving homes. If you are considering owning one I would encourage you to look to rescue groups and shelters. There are lots of wonderful animals that need people to love and to love them too. The people that volunteer their time, money, and abilities have my utmost respect and gratitude. Please try to help them when they need it as most rely on donations from their communities. They do their best to provide comfort, shelter, and healing to these animals in need. Max!

Favorite Toys

Max loves to play with all his toys. He gets plenty of playtime and exercise everyday with his Mom and Dad and any guests who come to visit! He is friendly and outgoing and loves attention! When he isn't in the mood to be sociable he will swish his big tail around and walk away! One of his favorite toys is a little stuffed panda bear! He loves to carry it all over the house so its always with him. It's his baby! What kinds of toys are your cats favorite? Do they carry them around the house too?

Max!

Favorite Foods

Max eats a diet that is mainly dry cat food. He can be a bit picky his Mom Sandy told me! Some of his favorite things are treats and tuna! Anytime her or her husband get ice-cream he jumps up in a hurry! Me too he thinks! Well they don't want him to have it so they give him his treats or tuna so he feels like he is having a 'treat' too! What are your cats favorite things to eat? Do you feed them dry, wet, or both? There are so many brands out there and different ingredients in them. Many owners are now making their own by grinding up quality meat themselves just to be sure they know what their pets are eating.

Maxwell Dexter Maine!

Here is Max! He is my friend Sandy's Maine Coon. He is a big boy that has the run of the house!

His favorite person is his Dad Ed! Anywhere he goes Max is not far behind trying to help him with whatever he is doing. He loves to grab his socks and carry them all over the house! Funny but his Mom has to pick up after him!  What kind of things do your cats like to do? Do they hide stuff or carry things around with them too?

Maine Coon Cats

Origins of Maine Coon Cats

Where do Maine Coon Cats come from? There are some interesting myths and legends about them. One saying goes that they are the result of a domestic cat and raccoon mating! That one is pure myth as they are two different species. Another one is that a captain named Coon from England kept long haired cats on his ship to keep rodents down, as he docked in ports in Maine his feline companions mated with native cats. The offspring were dark brown, large, and had long bushy tails that may have been mistaken for raccoons. Given his name and their appearance Coon cats became a popular name given to them. A most fascinating legend involves Marie Antoinette! In a plot to smuggle the French Queen out of France, a captain Clough was enlisted to gather her belongings and six of her favorite cats. She was seized and beheaded, but the captain sailed to America upon where her cats bred with the native breeds producing Maine Coons. The most logical origin is that settlers coming to America brought their cats with them and they bred with the domestic cats here. Maine Coon cats seem to take very well to training given their unique attributes. Many owners are surprised by their intelligence and abilities. They are known as the dogs of the cat world! Starting early and using positive reinforcement such as treats and affection will help you in training. Many have been taught to fetch, rollover, "speak", and walk on a leash! Grooming 101

Tips to keep Kitty looking their best!

Maine Coons have some special grooming needs. Their coats have two layers and they are prone to matting.Weekly brushing should help avoid this and hairballs! Many like water so if you are able to a bath is good for them. With the amount of hair they have make sure to wet it thoroughly and rinse well.Keeping their claws trimmed is also beneficial so as to not snag your furniture or you! Some pet owners brush their teeth and there are products available for this. Starting a grooming schedule when they are young is best so that they become accustomed to it. Behavior

 How does your Maine Coon behave? Are they more laid back than other cats? More outgoing?  Most Maine Coons are gentle giants, they love to be around people and other pets. They are very social and like to be around where the family is at. They get along well with children too. They have a natural affinity for water! Most cats don't, and they have a unique way of "meowing" that is more of a "chirping sound". Some have even been taught to play fetch!

Keeping Kitty Comfy In Hot Weather

Spring is in the air! Summer not far away! We all know to put on sunscreen and keep ourselves hydrated, but outdoor cats need extra protection in staying safe. Fleas and ticks, insect stings,and extreme heat can be bad for your cat. Always keep fresh water available, check your cats paws for any damage from hot asphalt, and make sure they have access to shade. Now would be a good time to make sure their vaccinations are up to date too! On extremely hot days it's better to keep them inside where they wont get overcome from the heat. Having air conditioning is great, but if not make sure to have some fans blowing to circulate the air.

Dry or wet? 

Which one is better for your cat?

There is much debate about the best diet for your cat. They are obligate carnivores  and that means they eat meat. Dry cat food is more convenient because it can be kept longer but may not supply all of the necessary moisture for digestion. Always have fresh water available for your cat. Wet food has more moisture in it and may provide more minerals and vitamins than dry varieties. Meat should be the number one ingredient in their food. Maine Coon Health Concerns

Most Maine Coons are typically healthy, but there are  some health issues that this breed can have.

Hereditary issues they may encounter are hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) a common form of heart disease in cats. Hip dysplaysia, a defect of the hip socket, and spinal muscular atrophy which is death of nerves in the spinal column that affect the legs and trunk of the body. Regular vet checkups can help prevent most health issues in them and all cat breeds
